Cycling and mountain biking in the Vinschgau Valley, the most advanced biking region in South Tyrol

The Upper Vinschgau Valley is an El Dorado for mountain bikers and cyclists. The valley is one of the sunniest and at the same time driest regions in the Alps and offers a cycling track network spanning over almost 680 kilometres, the "Rad & Bike Arena". The tracks themselves provide steep and challenging routes as well as cosy flat ones - the Arena pleases families and sportsmen alike. Our Hotel St. Jakob is the ideal starting point for your bike ride. Besides detailed informative matarial, we support cyclists with a garage, a drying room and a tool trolley.

Hobby cyclists might know the Via Claudia Augusta cycle path. It follows an antique Roman street for over 700 km from Augsburg - Germany, to Venice. It was constructed over 2000 years ago and was the only route of the Roman Empire to lead across the Alps. The most popular and most beautiful parts of this path are located from Reschen to Meran, where the countryside is particularly diverse. After winding around the Reschen See and the Haider See, the route meanders through meadows and forests to Burgeis, passing the monastery Marienberg and the castle Fürstenburg as well as a couple of tiny dreamy villages, including Glurns.  It leads cyclists straight through the tiny midieval village and follows the course of the Etsch river up to the lakes in the nature reserve delta of the Stilfsbach, through the sunny vineyards of Schluderns, the Vinschgau Valley orchards and sleepy hamlets.

On the cycle path from Mals to Meran cyclists can fully concentrate on their cultural, gastronomical and scenic expedition as the road bends slightly downwards on this route. If desired, cyclists can use the railway of the local "Vinschger Bahn" to comfortably return to any starting point.

The bicycle and mountain bike concept of the Vinschgau Railway

Explore the Vinschgau Valley by railway and bike together: the local railway system of the Vinschgau Railway offers convenient bike rental points at the main stations. There you can buy a special ticket as well which includes bike rental and a ticket from Meran to Mals and return. in this way you can start combined railway and bicycle tours in both directions with the option to stop at any station anytime and to cover some distance by train.

Guided Tours

The local Bikeshuttle Service offers guided tours for cyclists, racing cyclists, mountain bikers and downhill bikers. If you prefer to ride through these tracks on your own it is possible to download them in the BikePoint at the main station in Mals to your GPS system. Look here for some tour examples.
